Project Log
Week 1: 24/02/25
On Monday’s session in the classroom, I decided to focus my time updating and improving my Project Proposal and my timetable, due to feedback that I received, which recommended that I reflected and updated these sections within my project. In my Project Proposal, I decided to add on some sections where I was previously relatively vague. I highlighted these sections to make my tutors aware of my improvements. For my timetable, I decided to start over, as my previous work made little to no sense within the project, as I was originally going to start my composition before my research. After thorough contemplation, I ultimately decided that this was not a successful start to my project, resulting in me completely altering my timetable. This session was ultimately successful, as I was able to reflect and develop the current aspects in my project.
On Tuesday’s session in the classroom, I decided to continue updating my Project Proposal and my timetable, as I was not able to complete these in the previous session. I was able to finish updating my Project Proposal, which allowed me time to focus on my timetable, as I still had three more weeks to complete by this point in the session. By the end of class, I was able to complete a further week, completing the final two weeks in the LRC after class. I found this session to be ultimately successful, as I was able to complete these sections within my project, which will allow me to focus on the ‘context’ section of my project.
On Wednesday’s session in the classroom, I was able to start my context, describing my project, alongside my plans and my influences for choosing this specific topic. I also began looking into projects I could further research for the other half of my context, where I eventually decided to research, “Star Wars.” I will continue this further into the next session, as I feel this is an important aspect to research, before I begin my compositions. This session was relatively successful, as I was not able to complete as much work as originally planned. I ultimately feel that if I worked on my project in the practical session, I would have been able to complete a lot more work.
On Friday’s session in the classroom, I decided to open a word document and find headings that may help me in my project. Some examples include: How to compose for a successful film composition, Suitable keys and modulations for my chosen theme, Key structures seen within this theme. Doing this, will allow me to gather vital information that I may require for my compositions, giving me a clearer insight of how to create my pieces successfully. With a short amount of time left for my theory lesson, I decided to continue my context, as I would like to start my SWOT analysis and my survey in the following week. This session was ultimately successful, as I was able to start my research and continue my context.
Problems and solutions:
One issue that appeared this week, was that I was not able to complete the context session for my project. I feel this may hold me back in further aspects, as I will have to continue this into the following week, where I will not be able to focus on my original ideas.
To overcome this issue, I will work on my research at home, where I can type it up in the next session. This will allow for more concentration within my work, due to a quieter atmosphere. This will also allow me to spend more time in my college sessions, receiving help where I may need it.
Another issue that appeared this week, was the amount of time it took me to update and improve my timetable and my project proposal. As these aspects where relatively time consuming, it prevented me from completing areas, such as my context, SWOT analysis, my research and my survey.
To overcome this issue, I will work outside from college session, in the LRC and at home, like previously mentioned. I feel it will allow me to catch up with work that I was unable to complete this week.
A final issue that appeared this week, was that I was not able to find the time to start my survey. I feel this will negatively impact my work, as it may appear rushed, as I will require them back before I start my composition, which I plan on starting in week three.
To overcome this issue, I will start discovering potential questions that I can implement into my survey. For example, I can find tracks in the first Hunger Games film, alongside tracks from a Star Wars film, preferably VI, ‘Return of the Jedi’. I will focus my attention within the survey of these tracks, discussing questions, such as how it affects the listener, how it adapts to the atmosphere and if it ultimately relates to how the characters are feeling.
Reflection:
This week, I have discovered that I will need to work on my time management skills, as I have fell behind with my original timetable slightly. This may negatively impact my project, as it may stop me from progressing further within certain areas within my project. For example, I will have to spend the following week working on more research, alongside my survey, which I planned to complete this week. In order to solve my time management issue, I will gather the correct help I need in my sessions, in areas where I may struggle. This will give me time to work independently, using the LRC, the cubes or my own time at home to work on areas where I am confident.
Targets for next week:
One target for the following week, includes the beginning of my research. I will start finding resources that will help me with further aspects in my project, including my compositions and my essay.
Another target for the following week, includes starting my survey, as in my timetable, I mentioned that I would be starting this in these sessions, but was unable too due to be having to update and improve further aspects. I will ensure that I start / complete this in the following week.
Week 2: 03/03/25
On Monday’s session in the classroom, I decided to continue working on the context aspect within my project. After loading up my document, it was discovered that some of my progress from the previous week did not save. Upon learning this, I agreed that I would spend the majority of this session catching up on areas that were deleted, alongside further aspects. After the break, I decided to start preparing for my SWOT analysis, seeing how I will be able to adapt my overall work to my Final Major Project. After starting this, I decided it would be beneficial to complete one aspect at a time, as to not confuse me in further session, so I ultimately decided to continue with my context section. This session was ultimately successful, as I was able to complete a large amount of work, regardless of the lost progress from previous sessions.
On Tuesday’s session in the classroom, I decided to continue my context, completing another box, before briefly continuing my research. I feel research is important, as it will massively help me with my compositions, alongside my essay, one of which I plan on starting in the following week. After the break, I decided to start my survey, finding clips from the films I am using as inspiration (Star Wars and The Hunger Games.) Underneath these clips, I decided to ask a variety of questions, including: “How does the music in this clip affect the scene? Does it relate to the overall atmosphere? Is the music suitable to this specific scene within the film? Does the music highlight the characters’ emotions? I feel that these questions will allow me to increase my understanding of the film, alongside the music within it. This session was ultimately successful, as I was able to complete another box within my context section, alongside starting my essay, where I will receive responses by the following week.
On Wednesday’s session in the classroom, I received feedback that will help me start my SWOT analysis, as I have been struggling with how I can start this aspect in my project. After discussing with my teacher, I finally was able to view how to write a successful SWOT analysis that relates to my Final Major Project, alongside other projects that may be relevant to my current project. After this discussion, I decided that I would start this, leaving time towards the end of the session to complete my context section. After spending half the session on this, I decided to continue with my context, as I my original aim at the start of this session, was to complete this. By the end of the session, I was able to produce another two boxes, leaving me with one left to complete for the following session. I found that this session was ultimately successful, I was able to complete a decent amount of work, starting my SWOT analysis, alongside almost completing my context, both of which I will complete in the following session.
On Friday’s session in the classroom, I was determined to complete both my context section and my SWOT analysis, alongside further completing my survey. To begin this session, I found myself completing the final box in my context section, allowing me to submit this into teams. After this, I dedicated my full focus to completing my SWOT analysis. This was a realistic target, as this session is a total of three hours, most of which I spent focusing on my SWOT analysis. There was a classroom switch at the break, meaning I was unable to stay in class at this particular time. As soon as I was able to enter the class, I decided to continue my SWOT analysis, where I was ultimately able to complete this and submit this to teams. This session was ultimately successful, as I was able to hand in both my context and my SWOT analysis for the deadline, allowing me to focus on my research, alongside planning for my first composition in the following week.
Problems and solutions:
One issue that appeared this week was that I was unable to fully complete my survey, which may cause issues when starting my composition, as I require the feedback before continuing with further sections within my project. This will specifically help me with my composition, as it will allow me to view a variety of successful aspects that is held within the music in these films.
To overcome this issue, I will continue this throughout the weekend, where I aim to complete this. I will find a wider variety of scenes from both Star Wars, specifically A New Hope, alongside the first Hunger Games film.
Another issue that appeared this week was that I feel I could have completed more research. This may cause issues when completing my composition, as I may not be as prepared as I would have originally planned.
To overcome this issue, I will use the LRC and the cube to complete my research. When I am not present in college, I will find the time at home to further complete this, which will allow me to fully prepare for my compositions.
A final issue that appeared this week, was that some progress in my context section was deleted for unknown reasons. I found that this set me back slightly, meaning I had to spend more time on this section, where I could have been spending my time completing my survey or more research.
To overcome this issue, I will make sure that I save all work before logging off the computer, ensuring that I do not lose any progress, as it may set me back further. I will also ensure that I complete any work where this may have happened. I will not allow this to demotivate me, as I feel this may be a factor in losing more of my work.
Reflection:
This week, I have discovered that I need to work more on my time management skills, as I am still slightly behind with my survey, as stated by my timetable. This may negatively impact my project, as I am required to complete my survey, before I start my composition. In order to solve my time management issue, I will continue working on my survey at home, as previously mentioned, allowing me to start my composition in the following week, as stated in my timetable. This would ultimately solve this issue, as I would be completely up to date with my timetable.
Targets for next week:
One target for the following week, includes the start of my composition. This is highlighted through my timetable, where it states that I will start this in week three, completing it in week 4. In the time between this week and week 3, I will plan specifically for this composition, discovering how I would like this to sound, and the outcome that I would like to achieve.
Another target for the following week, includes the ultimate completion of my survey, alongside receiving the feedback for this. I aim to have this complete by Tuesday, which is the specific date that I would like to start my composition.
Week 3: 10/03/25
On Monday’s session in the classroom, I decided to continue with my Project Log, as I was not able to complete this in the time between the previous session on Friday. After spending a generous amount of time on this, I decided it would be useful to continue planning for my compositions. I searched further into, “The Hunger Games,” and “Star Wars, A New Hope,” as I find that this will further help me with my compositions, allowing for a clearer understanding of how to successfully compose my own pieces. Towards the end of this session, I was made aware that I also had to complete an Annotated Bibliography alongside my research. I found that starting this in a full session, will allow me to concentrate to the best of my ability, meaning I would start this in the following session. This session was successful, as I was able to get a clearer insight on how I can successfully create my own compositions.
On Tuesday’s session in the classroom, I decided I would start my Annotated Bibliography, as it was brought to my attention in the previous session, that I would have to complete a detailed Bibliography, that discussed the sources I used to help me with my research. I was able to complete most of a section, but found my attention steering away as I progressed, which ultimately persuaded me to leave this section for the time being, as it would not be to the highest possible quality. I decided I would start a new section, where I would be more focused, as I spent roughly an hour on the previous one. This session was relatively successful, as I was able to complete a decent amount of my Annotated Bibliography.
On Wednesday’s session in the classroom, it was brought to my attention that I had been completing the survey incorrectly. I originally completed this on a word document and after a detailed discussion, I realised it would be easier to complete this in Google Forms. Completing it this way, will allow users to access my survey easier, as I will be able to email it, unlike my original method. In this session, I also had a discussion with my teacher, as I am massively struggling to find a suitable software for my compositions. I was recommended two: Olive and Davinci Resolve. After researching, I was unable to find Olive, as the results on Google were irrelevant to my request. However, after researching Davinci Resolve, I was able to discover that it would be suitable for my project, I may just need to talk to my teacher / IT, as it does not appear compatible with the computers. This session was ultimately successful, as I was able to complete my new survey, alongside sending it to various people. I was also able to find a suitable DAW for my compositions, which I will start in the following week.
On Friday, there was no session, however, I decided to still attend college and continue working in the LRC. During my time in the LRC, I was able to continue working on my Annotated bibliography, where I was able to complete the section that I started on Tuesday. I was unable to continue with the other section that I started, due to it being a video and the computers in the LRC do not allow audio. It also became apparent that I could not download the Davinci Resolve software on the college computers, so I will require a college laptop, where I will be able to work on my compositions, at home and in college. This was ultimately successful, as I was able to complete my first section to my Annotated bibliography.
Problems and solutions:
One issue that appeared this week, was that I found my attention span being relatively low. This meant that I struggled to focus more than usual, which resulted in me not getting as much work done as I would have originally planned.
To overcome this issue, I will ensure that there are no distractions present when I am working, alongside a better sleep schedule, as I feel this may have a negative impact upon my work.
Another issue that appeared this week, was that I cannot download Davinci resolve on the college computers. This may mean that I cannot start my compositions until I receive the laptop, and it unknown when that may be.
To overcome this issue, I will discuss the rough date of when I will receive the laptop, and in the time that I do not obtain this, I will plan for other aspects in the project, for example: I will focus on both my compositions instead of just one, using two separate word documents to plan for each. I will also begin finding headings and sources that I can use for my essay.
A final issue that appeared this week, was that I did not complete my survey correctly. This meant that I had to spend time completing this in class, where I originally planned to continue with my Annotated Bibliography. This may suggest the possibility of falling behind with my work.
To overcome this issue, I will spend more of my spare time planning and continuing with my Annotated bibliography. I will find more sources that relate to my chosen theme within my project, updating my Annotated Bibliography as I progress.
Reflection:
This week I have discovered that I need to organise my time and work, due to the fact that I cannot start my compositions until at least the following week. This may negatively impact my project, as it will prevent me from progressing with further aspects, such as my essay and my Annotated Bibliography. This will ultimately result in me falling behind further with my timetable. To solve this issue, I will plan ahead with both my compositions, which will allow me to be completely aware of every aspect, such as key, modulations, structure etc. I will also plan ahead with my essay, finding suitable headings and sources that will help me with this. Receiving the laptop would result in my being capable of catching up with my work, allowing me to complete areas that I am currently behind with.
Targets for next week:
One target for the following week, includes the start of my composition. I feel this is important to start as soon as possible, as I my original timetable states that I was to start this in week three. If I procrastinate any longer, I may fall behind drastically with my work and my timetable.
Another target for the following week, includes the continuation of my Annotated Bibliography. I feel that this is an important aspect within my project, as it will help me with various areas, such as my essay and potentially my compositions.
Week 4: 17/03/25
On Monday’s session in the classroom, I decided to alter my research to become more visually appealing. My original research was in the form of a word document, written out in a list – like format. However, I decided to produce my research in the form of a PowerPoint, where I am able to write each section in an individual colourful box. I found that this helped me massively, as I am a visual learner, and this organised layout will allow me to easily focus on my research. I chose to complete my first section on, “The Hunger Games,” discovering a scene that I feel would be best for my project. I ultimately decided on the, “Final Fight,” scene, as there are a variety of emotions portrayed throughout this scene. Through my research, I discovered a variety of aspects that I am going to include in my piece. For example, I found: the key, instrumentation and structure. It also took me a while to find the correct clip from this scene, as only shorter clips where accessible, where the start or the end would be missing from the clip. However, after a deeper search into the scene, I eventually found a version that starts before the mutts enter and finishes after Cato is pushed off the edge of the Cornucopia. I found this version was the most successful, as it allows more freedom within the music, as there are a wider range of emotions highlighted through the extended scene. Towards the end of the session, I decided to continue with my Annotated Bibliography, completing more of the section from the previous week. This session was ultimately successful, as I was able to discover a more successful way of producing my research, alongside updating my Annotated bibliography.
On Tuesday’s session in the classroom, I decided to continue with my research, planning ahead for my second composition. Similar to my previous research, I decided to find a scene in, “Star Wars: A New Hope,” that portrays a variety of emotions. I found that the, “Obi Wan Kenobi vs Darth Vader,” scene would be beneficial, as it highlights the anxiety – inducing atmosphere of the fight, alongside the sorrowful emotions illustrated by the other characters. I struggled to find a scene that was not edited by a fan, or that cut off before the other characters in the scene could react to the fight. Eventually, I found a version on the, “daily motion,” that contained an unedited version of the scene, that also contains the after math. I decided I would continue this throughout the following session, as I was not able to fully complete this in today’s session. I found that this session was ultimately successful, as I was able to continue my research.
On Wednesday’s session in the classroom, I discussed the laptop situation with my teacher as it is a massive concern to me, as it could be the potential downfall to my project. It was brought to my attention that the situation is currently unknown, and I will just have to wait. I then decided to continue my unfinished research from the previous session, where I discussed the: key, instrumentation and structure in further detail. After completing this, I decided to continue with my Annotated Bibliography, where I completed more sections from the previous source. I decided that I would start my composition in the following week, regardless of the laptop situation. Instead of using Olive of Davinci resolve, I would have to use another available software. This session was relatively successful, due to the completion of my composition preparation and research.
On Friday’s session in the classroom, I received the laptop for my project, which I felt was a massive relief, as I was able to finally implement my planning into my practical work. Before starting my work for this session, I decided to explore the laptop, finding how each software works and if my previous worked remained on it. To my relief, I found that my work remained on the laptop, meaning I am able to complete further work at home. After spending a while discovering the laptop and the ways it worked, I decided to explore more sources for my Annotated Bibliography, where I found multiple. I ultimately decided to compile these into a word document, where I will research each source in more detail in the upcoming sessions. It was brought to my attention that I need to message the sound design person, to rip the audio from the clips that I will be using for my compositions. This will enable me to use visuals, with my additional music on top. This session was successful, as received my laptop, alongside exploring the two available software. I also discovered more sources that I can use for my Annotated Bibliography.
Problems and solutions:
One issue that appeared this week, was that it took a while to sort the laptops. I completely understand the wider range of priorities for the IT department. However, I feel it has set me back within my project.
To overcome this issue, I will ensure that I work on my compositions thoroughly at home, spending a few hours each day completing more of my piece. After completing one, I will use my planning and preparation to start the next.
Another issue that appeared this week, was the lack of space on each PowerPoint slide. I may have to continue further research on another page if required, however, I feel this may appear messy.
To overcome this issue, I can use the same format from my previous slides and implement a similar appearance to both. I may also add the notes through each key on this slide, which will help me when composing my pieces.
A final issue that appeared this week, was the amount that I found myself zoning out when trying to complete work. I find that recently my concentration / attention span has been significantly shorter recently and may cause negative impacts throughout my project.
To overcome this issue, I will discuss ways in which I can fix this with those close to me, as I feel this is a reoccurring aspect in my education and general life.
Reflection:
This week, I discovered that I would need to manage my time better, similar to the previous weeks, as I have recently received my laptop. My timetable states that I would be due to start my second composition, whereas I am only just starting my first. Managing my time, would allow me to catch up on this and potentially complete this before I was due to start my essay. To solve the overall time management issues, I will dedicate a few hours each day to my compositions, allowing my tutors to listen during college sessions. I feel now that I have received my laptop, I will be able to catch up on areas where I fell behind with in my project.
Targets for next week:
One target for the following week, is that I will definitely start my first composition. I have found this relieving, as I have been stressing about this for a while, as I was supposed to start my composition in week three, as my timetable states.
Another target for this week, is that I will complete more for my Annotated Bibliography, as it will help me massively with every aspect within my project, such as my compositions, essay and more.
Week 5: 24/03/25
On Monday’s session in the classroom, I decided that I would continue my Annotated
Bibliography, as I feel it will be beneficial with my further research. I also decided to look
into the software in more detail, specifically DaVinci Resolve, as I feel this interests me
more than Olive. In this session, I also experimented with the software, implementing the
clips that I discovered, as I feel this is a good starting point for my compositions. This
session was ultimately successful, as I was able to get a clearer insight into DaVinci
Resolve, alongside updating my Annotated Bibliography.
On Tuesday’s session in the classroom, I received the clips with no audio, meaning I could
implement the muted version into DaVinci Resolve. This would allow me to include my
own tracks on top of the clip. I also decided I may start the composition in this session,
however, due to complication with the software, I was unable to do so. I discussed this
with my teacher, who recommended that I talk to the sound engineer for the college, as
they may know more about the software. After this discussion, I felt that my project was
at a stand- still, as it was apparent that there was not much I could do with my
composition. This led to an unsuccessful end to the session, as I had not completed much
in the time I had.
On Wednesday’s session in the classroom, I met up with the sound engineer, who
informed me that DaVinci Resolve is not suitable for creating music, whereas it is for
editing clips. I feel this would have been useful to know before it was downloaded onto
the laptop as it caused me to feel frustrated and distressed. I ultimately decided to use
BandLab, as it is a software that I am familiar with, and I will be able to create a piece
relatively quick as I am able to easily navigate the software. I started creating my piece
inspired by the ‘Final Fight’ scene from ‘The Hunger Games,’ however, I found this
relatively difficult as there are a lot of emotions portrayed throughout this scene. It is also
roughly five minutes long, which, alongside a second composition, would take too long to
complete. This session was, yet again, unsuccessful, as I was unfortunate enough to not
be capable of using DaVinci resolve. Regardless of this, I was able to start some of my first
composition.
Problems and solutions
One issue that appeared this week, was
that the software that I was recommended
in a previous week, are not fully suitable to
my exact project. Olive and DaVinci Resolve
are film software, where I will not be able
to insert my own instrument tracks, which
may cause issues when creating my pieces.
To solve this issue, I started my first composition on Bandlab, as I am familiar with the software, and I am also able to implement the audio into this, allowing me to take section of the audio, such as the talking section and implement it into my composition. I also find that there is not much time left to finish my project, and I am still required to complete my Annotated Bibliography, alongside my essay, which I cannot start until I have finished my composition.
Another issue that appeared this week, was
that I felt really overwhelmed with my
project, specifically my compositions, as the thought of completing two in a short amount of time worried me and made me stress in further aspects of life, such as being unable to sleep because of the stress.
To solve this issue, I received advice regarding this problem. It was recommended that I complete one, instead of the original two, as stated on my timetable. I feel this is beneficial to me in many ways, including mentally, as it was causing much distress and even affecting me in regular life.
A final issue that appeared this week, was
that I feel my research for my Annotated
Bibliography is falling behind, due to my
composition being such a high priority at
the moment.
To solve this issue, I will continue research throughout my spare time, so I can gather the correct resources that I may require for further aspects in my project, such as my essay and my composition.
Reflection:
This week, I discovered that I was unable to use my desired software, which will
negatively impact my project in various ways, such as: the lack of time I may have for my
Essay, Annotated Bibliography and Evaluation, alongside falling behind drastically with my
timetable. Using a different software, such as Bandlab, will allow me to catch up with my
work and potentially be capable of being back on track for my essay. I will dedicate a lot
of my time working on my project, including planning for my other composition and my
essay, alongside working hard on my current composition.
Targets for next week:
One target for the following week, is that I would like to complete my first composition,
as I do not want to rush the rest of my work. I aim to complete the majority of this at
home, on the college laptop that was assigned to me for this project.
Another target for the following week, is that I would like to complete more of my
Annotated Bibliography, as I find this to be a time – consuming task, and would ultimately
be helpful when completing further research.
Week 6: 31/03/25
On Monday’s session in the classroom, I found that it may be beneficial for me to continue
with my Annotated Bibliography, and find more sources, as I feel I have fell behind with
this in the previous weeks, due to my composition. I was able to discover a source that
related strongly to my project, as it features the how the composer for Star Wars was able
to successfully write the music for the films. I was able to complete a few detailed
paragraphs for this, which lead to a successful outcome for this session.
On Tuesday’s session in the classroom, I decided to start my composition over again, using,
“Star Wars – A New Hope,” as my inspiration, as I feel this may have a more successful
outcome compared to my original idea. I have noticed an increase of stress since starting
my second composition, as I feel as if I may not be able to complete this in time for the
deadlines in May. Regardless of starting this composition in the previous week, I was
unhappy with my ideas so decided it would be best to scrap my previous work and start
fresh again. I continued this for the rest of the session, where I will develop this further in
the following sessions. I found that this session was ultimately successful, as I was able to
make strong progress with my new composition.
On Wednesday’s session in the classroom, I decided I would further build my composition,
so I am able to plan for my other piece. I found this extremely stressful as the deadline is
becoming closer and I have a lot of work to complete before that period. I started thinking
of ways I could potentially change my project to make it easier for me to handle in the
short amount of time left. For example, I could try only completing one composition, but I
would have to discuss with my teacher if this would affect my grade. I decided I would do
this in the following session, as I would have a day to try and get as much of my
composition done as possible. This session was relatively successful, as I was not able to
complete as much work as I originally planned and started overthinking my abilities within
my project. Regardless of this, I remained proud of my current work, as I feel I have come
far in recent session.
On Friday’s session in the classroom, I gathered the courage to discuss this situation with
my teacher as I felt extremely stressed. After becoming visibly distressed, it was agreed
that I would just complete one composition, as this would not affect my grade. I feel if
there were no issues with receiving the laptop and with the software, this would have been
a realistic goal, but a variety of issues lingered over my project, preventing me from doing
so. I felt a weight off my shoulders, as I would now only have to focus on one composition,
completing this to the best of my ability. For the remainder of the session, I continued to
research sources that may help me with my project, implementing them into my
Annotated Bibliography. I found this session to be successful, as I finally had a clearer idea
of my projects’ outcome and what I can do to make this my most successful composition,
alongside developing my research.
Problems and solutions
One issue that appeared this week, was
that I would like to have completed more
research for my Annotated Bibliography. I
find this to be a time-consuming task, and I
often lose focus while completing a section
for this.
To solve this issue, I will remove distractions from around me, to allow me to focus on my research for my Annotated Bibliography. I will also complete further sections in my spare time.
Another issue that appeared this week, was
the stress that I faced throughout. I found
this week to be increasingly more stressful
than usual, as the deadline is becoming
increasingly closer.
To solve this issue, I will ensure that I spend time working on myself, which will allow me to keep calm and motivated to complete my work. I have also found a solution by cutting one of my compositions out of my project, giving me more time to focus on just the one composition.
A final issue that appeared this week, was
that I have been relatively uncertain with
how to compose my piece. I have changed
my ideas multiple times this past week,
eventually starting from scratch, as I felt it
was best. This may push back other aspects
within my project, persuading me to fall
further behind with my timetable.
To solve this issue, I will continue to adapt my composition to ensure that it perfectly suits my objective. I will experiment with different ideas, allowing plenty of time to complete my essay and evaluation, alongside uploading my work onto Wix.
Reflection:
This week, I discovered that I do not have to complete two compositions to achieve my targeted grade. Instead, I can focus on one piece, completing this to the highest possible quality, which will give me plenty of time to plan and prepare for other aspects in the project, such as my Essay and my Evaluation. Although I am behind on my timetable, I can see a successful outcome for my project, as I will no longer have to rush through two compositions, but I can spend more time developing one. I will dedicate a variety of hours to my project during my free time, which will allow a better overall outcome.
Targets for next week:
One target for the following week, includes the development of my composition, viewing if
my current progress synchronizes with the original clip. By doing this, it will allow me to see
how I can improve certain sections and see if they truly suit the scenes’ objective.
Another target for the following week, includes the development of my Annotated
Bibliography, as I would like to finish this as soon as possible. The completion of this task,
will allow me to be fully prepared to start my Essay, as I would have studied the correct
resources to help me with this.
Week 7: 07/04/25 - 14/04/25
Over the Easter Holiday’s I decided I would attempt to complete my composition,
improving and developing various sections, alongside adding further aspects within my
piece. Regardless of the copious amounts of effort put into my composition within these
two weeks, I was unable to complete this fully, due to being in work most days. I felt that
in my spare time, I was very drained and unable to focus fully, due to being tired, as I was
in work for a minimum of five days through each week. In the time where I felt motivated,
I improved my melody and introduction, alongside adding a counter melody for further
sections. The possibility of potentially being further along in my composition stresses me
massively, but I am overall proud of my current work. I feel these two weeks were
relatively successful, as I have a clearer aim for my composition and my understanding of
the outcome, but I will need to catch up on the time that I lost in the coming weeks.
One issue that appeared throughout these
weeks, was the lack of time available to
complete my composition. I feel it would
have been beneficial if I had more free
time, that I was not in work, so I could have
completed more of my composition and
potentially my research.
To solve this issue, I will use my current free time, alongside the time I have in college to complete both aspects, so I can progress onto my essay and evaluation.
Another issue that appeared throughout
these weeks, was that I often felt very
unmotivated to complete work. As
previously mentioned, I felt tired due to
work, as it is mentally and physically
draining. I often found my mind wandering
to other activities when completing my
work, which is impractical.
To solve this issue, I will complete my work in my spare time, as mentioned. I will also feel more motivated, due to not being in work so much, which will allow me more free time to complete this.
Reflection:
Over these two weeks, I have learned how to manage my time well, due to being in work,
alongside the ability to further gain my understanding of my composition. I feel more
confident with my project as a result of this. I have fell behind with my original timetable
quite drastically, but this will not prevent me from reaching a successful outcome. I will
also be able to start planning my essay in the coming week, where I will be able to discuss
the overall successful and unsuccessful areas that I have faced.
Targets for next week:
One target for next week, is that I would like to complete my composition. I feel this is a
realistic target, as I have progressed thoroughly in the past few weeks, and I am aware of
my intended outcome.
Another target for next week, is that I would like to start planning my essay. This will allow me to implement my research into one space, where I can discuss various aspects within my project.
Week 8: 21/04/25
On Tuesday’s session in the classroom, I decided to continue my research for my
Annotated Bibliography, continuing from my previous source, as I was not quite able to
finish this in session. I dedicated some time to improving this section, as I feel my wording
to certain sections were sloppy and unprofessional, from potentially feeling tired. After
ensuring this section was to the best of my ability, I continued to find another source and
discuss it. With only a few remaining, I feel like I should be able to complete my
Annotated Bibliography towards the end of this week, if not, the start of the following
week. This session was overall very successful, as I managed to complete one and a half
sources for my research, further leading me to almost finish this section of my project.
On Wednesday’s session in the classroom, I decided to implement all my evidence, in the
form of screenshots, onto a PowerPoint slide, so when I am ready to upload everything to
my Wix website, it will all be in order of what happened and when. I also found that
writing a small description beside each section will allow me to highlight my progress, if
the screenshots are not clear enough. I dedicated the majority of this session towards
this, as my objective was to make this appear as visually appealing and clear as possible.
With the time left over in the session, I decided to rearrange my Wix website, as I feel my
original sections were relatively confusing and not very straight forward. With help from
my teacher, I was able to implement the correct headings, in order, to complete the
layout of my Wix website, where I will eventually upload my work. This session was
successful, as I was able to make my work more clear and improve my project visually,
allowing me to feel more confidence in the outcome of my work.
On Friday’s session in the classroom, I decided to continue researching for my Annotated
Bibliography. I feel this is important to complete soon, as it will allow me to continue onto
different aspects within my project, such as my Essay, which I will begin planning for in
the following week. I decided to fully dedicate this session to my research, as I was
determined to complete the section I started in this session, but was unable too, as it was
a long source that contained a lot of information. Although I only focused on research for
this session, I find that it was overall successful, as I am nearing the end of my project,
specifically the research aspect within it.
Problems and solutions
One issue that appeared this week, was
that I struggled focusing a lot. I found this
to be a reoccurring problem when working,
as I often struggle concentrating. I feel I
may be further along in the project if I was
not dealing with this problem.
To solve this issue, I will discuss this with my parents, as it appears to be a general issue that I have struggled with for a long time. I feel talking to someone outside from college, may allow me to receive help with this.
Another issue that appeared this week, was
that I did not work on my composition very
much, as I prioritised my research for my
Annotated Bibliography. I feel this may
result in my composition appearing rushed,
if I do not complete this soon.
To solve this issue, I will prioritise my composition, as I feel I may be able to finish this in next upcoming sessions. Completing this, will allow me to plan for my ‘composition’ section for my essay.
A final issue that appeared this week, was
that I was not able to start planning for my
essay, which was my target from the
previous week. I feel that planning this will
allow a swift start into writing my essay.
To solve this issue, I will spend my spare time gathering the correct information that may be required to complete my essay. For example, I will find relevant research, alongside the successful areas, and areas that need development within my project.
Reflection:
This week, I was able to complete a hand full of my research, which will soon allow me to
start my essay. I feel that I am almost on schedule with my project, compared to the
previous weeks, as I have caught up on a relatively large amount of work, specifically on
my Annotated Bibliography. To become fully on schedule, I will work more at home,
completing my Annotated Bibliography and composition, as a whole. I feel dedicating a
lot of my time will allow me to complete all my work in plenty of time before the deadline
in mid-May.
Targets for next week:
One target for the following week, is the completion of my Annotated Bibliography. I feel
this is a realistic plan, as I have previously spent a lot of time dedicated to this, and with
only very few left to complete, I find this will be achievable in the upcoming week.
Another target for the following week, is that I would like to start planning my essay,
using a PowerPoint to collect the correct information / research, alongside listing the
headings I will use for this section of my project.
Week 9: 28/04/25
On Monday’s session in the classroom, I decided to continue with my composition, as I
feel I will be able to complete this in the upcoming sessions. At the start of the session,
when I loaded onto the software, I decided to listen to my piece overall, as I felt as if I
would recognise areas for development easier. However, when I listened to this, I found
an issue with the, “French Horn,” section. It appeared that the software had altered my
work, similar to the issue that appeared in the, “Genres,” project. It was continuous
throughout the majority of this instruments’ section, which became a massive issue, as I
was no longer able to work on further sections, but changing my previous work. I spent
the majority of this session inspecting each section carefully, as it has sometimes been
very minor, barely noticeable changes. There were no other major issues, but there were
minor changes to the, “low whistle,” section, where a few notes where slightly off key. In
the short amount of time left over, I decided to develop more of my composition, but I
was unhappy about the lack of time I was able to spend continuing my composition,
where I, instead, had to rearrange the sections that changed. This session was relatively
successful, as I was able to overcome a large obstacle in my project, but I was overall
unable to complete a lot of work.
On Tuesday’s session in the classroom, I decided I would continue developing my
composition, as I was not able to complete much in the previous session. I did not find an
issues similar to yesterday, which was an amazing sign, as I was able to put my full focus
into my composition. I was able to develop a good amount of my work, where I also
improved my introduction, as I feel it may have appeared a bit messy. I did not discover
any issues with the software or my piece in this session, which was a massive relief. This
session was ultimately successful, as there was nothing holding me back from progressing
with my composition.
On Wednesday’s session in the classroom, I decided I would look into my Annotated
Bibliography, as I feel it has not been a priority this week and I do not want to fall behind
with my research. I decided to start discovering more sources that I could use for my
project, as it would help me in future sessions. I felt that I would be able to move onto
each section more swiftly, rather than having gaps, where I will find time to get
distracted. Instead, I will be able to stay more concentrated, as it will be harder to lose my
train of thought. I also considered ways I could develop my piece further to suit my
chosen clip, potentially changing or adding instruments for harmonies or adding extra
effect. I felt this session was overall successful, as I was able to discover more sources for
my research, completing some in the process, alongside planning for the future of my
composition.
On Friday’s session in the classroom, I decided to continue my composition, implementing
some ideas from yesterday’s session. For example, there is a session that includes a
flugelhorn that I decided to experiment with, as I felt strings may be more suitable for this
section, as it sounds similar to the French Horn, and it worried me that both instruments
may clash. After experimenting with violas, string orchestras and a lot more, I decided to
stick with an instrument in the Brass family, potentially sticking with my original
instrument. I also decided to continue building and improving sections, as I feel that I will
be able to complete his in the upcoming sessions.
Problems and solutions
One issue that appeared this week, was
that the, “French horn,” section altered
dramatically, without me changing
anything. From the start, I was worried that
this may be an issue, as it affected my
previous project drastically.
To solve this issue, I decided it would be best to save my work frequently, roughly every five minutes or so, to ensure that any changes implemented by the software would not be major, as I would be able to ‘undo’ my work with no major consequences.
Another issue that appeared this week, was
that I did not spend much time on my
Annotated Bibliography, which I feel may
be a problem, as there are still quite a few
aspects to complete within my project.
To solve this issue, I will work on completing this at home, alongside my composition, as it would help me swiftly progress onto my essay.
A final issue that appeared this week, was
that I feel I am falling behind with my
project, as I am yet to complete my
Annotated Bibliography and Composition. I
have also not started by essay, which may
become a further issue.
To solve this issue, I will ensure that I do not stress too much, as I feel this demotivates me to progress with my work. I will work on completing at least two aspects in the following week / sessions.
Reflection:
This week, I have learned that I need to manage my time better, as I did not dedicate
much time towards my Annotated Bibliography, like I originally planned. This may
negatively impact my project; however, I plan on resolving this, through working on this
further in my spare time. Although I am behind on my project, I feel I will be able to
complete this in plenty of time, as I will spend a minimum of an hour to two hours each
day, working on my project.
Targets for next week:
One target for the following week, is that I will complete my Annotated Bibliography,
which I feel is a realistic target, due to the lack of sources that are currently required. I will
ensure this is finished, in the relevant alphabetical order.
Another target for the following week, is that I will complete my composition, as I have
progressed massively within the previous session, alongside my spare time at home. I feel
this is realistic, as I do not have much let, other than a small section and areas where I feel
need developing.
Week 10: 05/05/25
On Monday’s session in the classroom, I decided to continue building my Annotated
Bibliography, as I felt that, with complete focus and dedication, I would be able to finish
this in this session. However, due to touching upon other aspects, such as my essay
planning and my project log, I was unable too. I decided to continue with my project log,
as I, unknowingly, fell behind slightly with this, due to focusing my attention on my
Composition and my Annotated Bibliography. Although I was not able to fully complete
my research, I was on track to complete this in the next session or later in the day, as I
was left with very little to complete. This session was ultimately successful, as I was able
to catch up with my project log, alongside almost completing my Annotated Bibliography.
On Tuesday’s session in the classroom, I decided to further dedicate my time to my
Annotated Bibliography, where I was able to fully complete this within the first half of the
session. For the remainder of the session, I copy and pasted this onto a word document,
where I listed them in alphabetical order, before pasting them back onto my original
document in the correct order. Although this took longer than anticipated, I was proud to
have finally finished the research section of my project, where I will soon start using this
information to help me with my essay. This session was extremely successful, as I was
able to complete my Annotated Bibliography, which was my target from the previous
week.
On Wednesday’s session in the classroom, I decided I would continue with my
composition, as there I have almost completed this aspect in my project. Through much
focus, I finally finished the final section of my composition, where I will continue to work
on various improvements that I could make throughout it. I found that there were no
alterations on the behalf of the software, which allowed me to progress thoroughly. I also
changed the, “flugelhorn,” to be a, “solo violin,” as I feel this had a stronger emotional
impact on the piece. This session was overall successful, as I was able to almost complete
another section of my project, my composition, where I had sound for each aspect of the
piece. However, I will add more layers throughout the piece, for stronger impact.
On Friday’s session in the classroom, I decided I would start my essay, as I have the
relevant resources, alongside my plan, which would help me with the aspects I should
discuss within my essay. I decided to focus on the, “problem solving,” and, “solutions,”
aspect, as I feel there have been a lot of negative impacts within my project. I also
discussed how I was able to overcome them, with various solutions. By the end of the
session, I had completed a total of, “647,” words, which I find was a successful end to the
session.
Throughout the weekend, I decided I would fully complete my Composition, adding layers
in various section to help build tension. I implemented each track into DaVinci Resolve,
where altered the volume, allowing each track to stand out, without being over the
recommended sound limit. This took roughly three hours, as I was unsure how to navigate
the software, alongside the fact that each track, once in the timeline, was not labelled,
meaning I had to guess which instrument was which. This caused a lot of confusion, but I
was eventually able to get each track to the correct volume. I ensured that the music was
synchronised with the clip, which, to my surprise, it did. A feeling in my stomach told me
it would not sync with the clip, and it was a massive relief to see that it did. With the help
of my partner, we were able to get this into a full – sized clip, with the music. As it was
late, roughly 1am, I decided I would send this to my teacher the following day, to get
relevant feedback.
After receiving feedback, I decided to use lower frequencies in certain sections, as it was recommended. It was also brought to my attention that my piece was quite repetitive, so I was able to change some sections of the melody, adding extra instruments, alongside altering the counter melody. Due to not having much time, I will implement this into DaVinci on Monday, where I will be able to fully have my composition finished.
Problems and solutions
One issue that appeared this week, was
that I fell behind with my Project Log from
previous weeks, as I have dedicated a lot of
my focus and attention on my composition
and Annotated Bibliography.
To solve this issue, I will continue to work on my Project Log, after each session, to ensure that I do not fall behind and I am completely up to date with everything that I have completed.
Another issue that appeared this week, was
that ordering my Annotated Bibliography
took a lot longer than expected, resulting in
me not being able to complete anything
else in that session. I planned on
completing this, then continuing onto my
essay or composition, but was unable too,
due to this taking a lot of time.
To solve this issue, I will continue working on different aspects within my project, such as my essay, in my spare time. I will dedicate the rest of my time towards this, so I am able to complete this to the highest possible quality.
A final issue that appeared this week, was
that I spent a lot of time completing my
composition, where it was brought to my
attention that I need to change sections.
This may mean that I spend more time on
this, instead of my Essay.
To solve this issue, I will spend more time working on this, whether it be working on theory work, when the class is focusing on something else. Or this could be working more at home to complete more work.
Reflection:
This week, I have improved on my time management skills, as I spent the majority of my
spare time working on my project. I was able to complete my Annotated Bibliography,
alongside almost finishing my Composition, which I will complete on Monday. This will
give me the rest of my time, until the deadline, to complete my Essay and Evaluation.
Although I have faced various problems throughout this project, resulting in me falling
behind with my project, I have almost caught up with my work. I will continue to put in
copious amounts of effort, which will allow me to complete everything by Friday.
Targets for next week:
One target for the following week, is that I will complete my Essay and my Evaluation. I
will work on completing my Essay by Tuesday, which will allow me time to finish my
Evaluation by Thursday.
Another target for this week, is that I will submit everything this following Friday, earlier if
possible. I will implement everything from my project onto Wix, where I will be able to
submit this to be marked.
Week 11: 12/05/25
On Monday’s session in the classroom, I decided to dedicate the whole session towards
focusing on my Essay, as I would like to have this complete by the following day, which
would allow me to spend Wednesday and Thursday developing my Evaluation. I was able
to complete over 1000 words overall by the end of this session, where I worked on this
further at the end of the day. I spent most of the following day updating and improving
some sections, where I was able to complete it with a total of 1600 words.
On Wednesday and Thursday, I decided I would focus on my Evaluation, as this was the
final aspect of my work that required completing. I struggled with this, as there were a
variety of events that occurred within my project, ranging from February to within the
recent weeks. I was able to complete this on the Thursday, as I struggled focusing on the
Wednesday. On Friday’s session, I will work on uploading everything to my Wix website,
where I will submit it.
My evidence from my Project Log is featured in my, "Practical Skills," section.
